The X-Trail competes in the busiest part of the market, and its two distinguishing features are worth knowing about. e-POWER is unusual: the wheels are driven entirely by an electric motor, and the petrol engine exists only to generate electricity. It drives like an EV, but you fill it at a servo and never plug it in. If you like how an electric car drives but charging doesn’t suit your situation, it’s worth a look.
What to think about
Five-seat or seven-seat changes the boot and the price. Most buyers are better off with five unless the third row is a genuine requirement.
The conventional petrol is the value pick. e-POWER costs more up front and earns it back on fuel if you do a lot of stop-start city driving; less so if you’re mostly on the highway.
